Teeth whitening; methods that won`t break the bank
Like most cosmetic procedures teeth whitening has come a long way in the past 10 years. From a simple and economic DIY kit to a more sophisticated system the industry is awash with new ideas, and new techniques. Veneers are at the top end of the market and are available through most dental surgeries, you start off with tests and an examination to see which type of veneers is most suited to your individual problem. Let’s look at the simple problem of a discoloured tooth or teeth, this method is good for one tooth or a whole set. The dentist will take digital photos and also do a colour test to make sure the right shade of white blends in with the surrounding teeth. From this an orthodontist will make the veneers, to get an idea of what one is like think of a false nail covering a bitten one. When the veneer is ready you will be called back to the surgery, the dentist will numb the tooth and shave off a sliver of the enamel. This is a two fold format, first to get a good grip and adhesion, and secondly to blend the veneer to make it look natural. The amount taken off is usually equal to the thickness of the veneer. The dentist will then cement the veneer in place and seal it all the way round to stop infections. The result is quite stunning and natural looking, the tooth can be used just like a natural one and the life span of the veneer is around 3-5 years, then they are easily replaced. A thicker one is available, but this needs more enamel taken off and limits the amount of times they can be replaced, however they last from 10-15 years. You clean them like your other teeth and in some cases they can also cover not just a discolouring, but a crack or a chipped tooth. The thicker ones can be used for covering a misaligned tooth. The cost varies also from £250 to £500 per tooth, but when you see the results and feel the confidence coming back when you smile, it does seem to be worthwhile. If your dentist doesn’t do this treatment then they can still give you some advice on where to go, always use an approved and registered cosmetic dentist for this treatment, your teeth will not grow again in adulthood, and so when you seek dental treatment always use a registered dentist.
